Do your tutoring rates include traveling time? Most often, yes! We cater our tutoring services to clients near our location. We generally account for clients located between San Francisco and Palo Alto. If you are located outside that area, we may factor in a travel fee into a revised hourly rate, since significant driving time cuts into our availability to work with other clients. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

When and why did you start tutoring?Andrew here. This one's a bit of a read, enjoy. As the oldest of four brothers, I've been a mentor of sorts for the majority of my life. In high school, I informally gained some tutoring experience with the occasional homework help I'd provide to my younger siblings. Fast forward to my second year of high school (2015), and I had the opportunity to gain some community service hours as a tutor for students in a freshmen Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) math classes. This was my first true experience as a tutor, and I loved it. The idea I follow, and still do, is 'Give a man fish, he will be fed today. Teach a man to fish, he can feed himself forever'. There's something amazing about having a direct impact on my student's academic abilities. I remember my students badgering me for the answers, which I eventually gave, but only after having a group discussion about the math to break it down and show the steps. My AVID tutorees began to understand that the true value lies in knowing how to do the math, not just the answer itself! More importantly, they started gaining the confidence they needed to begin understanding and intellectually applying themselves to new concepts in the class. Knowing tutoring was something I enjoyed, my parents helped me off the ground by talking my services up at family functions and neighborhood events. I was soon tutoring a couple of my neighbors on the block, and I continued to do so throughout much of college. Towards the end of college (2021), I created this website with the intention of reaching a broader audience in the Bay Area. The onset of the covid-19 pandemic exposed the fact that learning online was not working for everyone, and I helped many of my clients with math and science subjects that were difficult to grasp during this new normal. I quickly picked up more clients, expanded my offerings to tutor in person and remote, and continue to do so today. As of 2024, I've rebranded my website and business to Andrew's Tutoring Academy since I've received interest from other tutors to join in on my business. Balancing the needs of my clients while becoming a business owner can be tricky, but it's an exciting next step towards being able to provide quality tutoring services to more families than I can ever reach just by myself. Ultimately, I continue to tutor because my love for teaching material, strong organizational skills, and ability to foster independence has never been better! With all the clients I've helped, and all the experience I've gained in my 5+ years as a private tutor, I couldn't even imagine ending it all now.
